Crossing the Andes on horseback is one of the best ways to become part of the local culture and scenery. This is why Tierra del Volcán specializes in horseback rides and treks. Our guests can choose between riding through farm land for a couple of hours or going up to a full day under Independent Adventures. For longre and more specialized expeditions you can take a Taylor Made or All Inclusive Tour.
The horses we use are called “criollos parameros”. They have adapted to the arduous conditions of the páramo, losing height in the process but gaining strength and stamina to endure the harshness of the surroundings.
We provide riding accessories in the form of a woollen poncho, waterproof poncho, saddle bags, riding helmets and zamarros (sheepskin chaps) in the style of the chagras (Ecuadorian cowboys)
The rides take us through exclusive trails of our Haciendas at the majestic páramos and native forest of the Cotopaxi area, where our native guides intertwine legends, history and tradition in their tales.
At Hacienda El Porvenir we ride close to herds of wild horses and fighting bulls. We can also see various species of high-altitude birds (condors are frequently spotted) and native flora against a backdrop of spectacular scenery. Some rides take us up to 4,200m. near the summit of Rumiñahui, from where there is a unique, unbeatable view of Cotopaxi. After relishing the freedom of nature at its wildest and enjoying the exhilaration of galloping with the pure wind of the high Andes. we return to the farm house, where a warm fireplace and a hot drink will be ready to welcome us.
Horseback riding at Hacienda El Porvenir (independent adventures):
Horseback rides from Hacienda Santa Rita, are also available . Here the route takes us into the heart of high Andean woodland and the páramo. We ride along spectacular trails, ideal for seeing the variety of Andean flora and fauna.
