Full itinerary

Day 1 Rumiñahui Volcano Horseback riding

After a brief riding lesson, and donning local-style riding gear (poncho and sheepskin chaps), we start out on our ride from Hacienda El Porvenir towards the slopes of Rumiñahui Volcano. The ride takes 3H30 and we will pass by herds of wilds horses and bravo cattle. A delicious traditional lunch will be bubbling on the stove. Hike on the trails of Hacienda El Porvenir during the afternoon.

Day 2 Trekking & biking

We do a circuit around El Pedregal Valley. We bike towards Hacienda Santa Rita Ecological Reserve (1H30 aprox) mainly on gravel and dirt roads. At Santa Rita we will enjoy the beauty of the high Andean forest hiking on magnificent trails. we will visit Condor Machay waterfall. Enjoy a campestre lunch at the reserve, and continue on our bikes back to Hacienda El Porvenir. This bike stretch takes approximately 2.5 hours. Dinner and overnight stay at Hacienda El Porvenir.

Day 3 Climbing Rumiñahui

Our aim today is to climb up to the central peak of the extinct volcano of Rumiñahui 4,615m. (15,141 ft). To do this, we set off very early in the morning and cross vast páramos with amazing scenery all around. We can see Cotopaxi in all its glory, the inter-Andean valleys, the mountains and volcanoes of the main Ecuadorian ranges, such as the twin peaks of the Ilinizas, Corazón, Pichincha, Cayambe and Antisana. This climb is ideal acclimatization for the following day. The ascent goes from 3,600 to 4,615m. and takes about 7 hours there and back to the farm house.

Day 4  Cotopaxi Galciers

Meet your guide and fit the mountain climbing gear. Transfer form Quito to Hacienda El Porvenir. Lunch. Transfer from the Hacienda to the Refugio’s car park. The walk from the car park at 4,500m 7 14760 ft. to the climbing hut (Refugio José Ribas) at 4,800m 7 15744 ft.. should take us about 45 minutes to one hour. Once in the refuge, we will get ready to start our glacier practice. This will provide us with basic knowledge on how to climb on ice and the respective safety measures. In the afternoon we go back to the refuge, have an early dinner and rest until midnight.

Day 5 Cotopaxi Summit

After getting all the equipment ready in the refuge, at midnight we start our assault on the summit of Cotopaxi. The ascent takes about 6-8 hours and the descent 2 -4hours. To climb Cotopaxi, we need to be physically and mentally prepared. It is not a complicated or technical climb, but we must have enough training and knowledge of mountain safety. After we reach the top, we trudge back down to the refuge, soaking up the incredible colours of dawn above the clouds. Our vehicle will be waiting for us at the car park and will transfer us to Hacienda El Porvenir. Lunch and hot shower at El Porvenir. Return to Quito 14H00.
