Research Projects

Encouraging knowledge and research of the ecosystem and local culture, along with best ecotourism practices, is an important projection of our commitment to the sustainable development of the region. This is why at Tierra del Volcán we believe in supporting research projects and internships, and have made agreements with various universities and institutions from all over the world for this purpose.

Research studies performed:
• Anthropology studies (1999, 2000, 2008)
• Studies on the mitigation of risks inherent in volcanic activity (2002, 2004)
• Pilot project on best practices in ecotourism and adventure (2000, 2002, 2005, 2010)
• Global Warming. Study on arachnid populations in páramos (2009)
• Studies on botany and plants endemic to the central Ecuadorian páramos (2008)
• Monitoring of condors (2008, 2009, 2010)

Tierra del Volcán and Fundación Páramo have jointly designed community service programmes. These seek to foster the positive development and conservation of the region, along with the personal growth of the volunteers.

Volunteer Programe


Work with local primary schools in the following subjects:
- Computer studies
- English
- Art (music, painting, sculpture, drama)
- Physical Education and Sports

Ecology Club – Environmental Education

- Group management and guiding

- Maintenance and Cleaning

Tierra del Volcán is located in one of the most beautiful parts of the Andes, in páramo and high Andean forest ecosystems. You can help us conserve this treasure by supporting one or more of the projects we run:
- Waste Management
- Signage
- Reforestation
- Environmental Projects

Volunteers can join in the different projects we are running at the moment or can design a project themselves in line with their skills and interests.

They can also get involved in the projects in the area run by Fundación Páramo.

Each programme has its own specifications and requirements. The minimum length of volunteering is one month. Programmes related to community work and education require a minimum 2-month commitment and an intermediate level of Spanish.
There are five working days and two free days a week.


The cost is $300 per month. This includes board and lodging, local transport and materials for your project.


As volunteers, you will be able to learn about the amazing ecosystem of the páramo and about Andean people and traditional life in the Ecuadorian highlands, while staying in a friendly, comfortable setting. You can also join in some recreation and tourism activities, such as horseback riding, hiking, camping, ziplining, birdwatching and much more, depending which take place during your stay. At the end of your volunteering programme, you will be given a work certificate and, if required, work references.
