Education

Education as a cornerstone of social responsibility

Education is a universal right and good education should be general practice rather than  a privilege. In Tierra del Volcán we firmly believe that the best way we can have a positive influence on the inhabitants of this area and society as a whole is through education: education for the visitors and the visited on the importance of the páramo ecosystem, on the natural diversity of this region, on its volcanic and geological history and on the cultural wealth of the area. We learn by listening to and watching the native guides, doing things in the locality, criss-crossing this amazing scenery and feeling the immense beauty of nature unspoilt by man.
One way or another, we would like our visitors to leave us with a feeling that they have learnt something new, maybe understanding the difference between scrubland and páramo, seeing close-up how glaciers are disappearing with global warming, or getting a grasp of the values of traditional Andean life. As well as learning about the outside world, our experiences in the heart of nature may also tell us more about ourselves, all in an atmosphere of equality, fraternity and respect.
We would also like to share what we have learnt and so we regularly organize meetings with the local people to discuss various subjects, like sustainable development, ecotourism and conservation. Additionally we hold workshops on waste management, volcanic emergency management and preventive health through the proper use and protection of water resources.

Supporting Education:

Seed Library Donation
Back in 2002, donors from different organizations and countries helped us get this project under way. The donations have continued and Tierra del Volcán has now set up four seed libraries, with over 2,000 books, in the primary schools of El Pedregal, Rumipamba, San Ramón and Loreto.

Ecology Club

Tierra del Volcán started this club as a way for both Ecuadorian and foreign volunteers to be able to do projects with pupils at local primary schools. The projects are related to ecology, environment, science and art and are part of the schools’ extracurricular options

Curricular reinforcement
In this programme, foreign volunteers help the children at Ana María Velasco primary school in El Pedregal to get a better grasp of certain subjects learnt in the classroom, such as English, art, physical education and ecology.
